Frequently Asked Questions
9Q: I'd love to talk to you about a portrait. How does that work?
A: The first step is to book a consultation to exchange thoughts, and answer any questions you have. If you feel it is a good fit, the creative process is begun together. There are possibilities to explore such as which medium will be used? What will be the size of the portrait? Will the portrait be formal or informal? I will help you decide on the clothing and background that will appear in the painting with the intention of capturing a unique personal quality within the portrait.
Then a date and location for the photo session and sketches will be set.
Q: Do you work from photos or from life?
A: Both. Ideally I like to spend time getting to know the people I paint so that I can capture their essence in the portrait. Sometimes you have a favorite photo to work from, which I'm happy to use. Then, sometimes it is not always possible to take a photo, especially if it is a surprise gift or the person is no longer with us. I can certainly use your favorite photo or heirloom photo. The photos I use are for references only. I begin all my artwork with an original detailed drawing. I was classically trained and understand the importance of drawing by hand to get the true gesture and essence of the person.
Q: Should we give you a photo to paint from?
A: I can work from your existing favorite photos or an heirloom photo, if the clarity of features is there.
Q: What are your prices?
A: Prices are based on the size and how much of the figure is in the finished piece, the amount of detail, and the detail included in the background.
You may choose from price points ranging from $950 - $4000 for pencil/charcoal drawings and, $2000 - $8,000 for oil paintings.
I accept checks, VISA, MC. Also installment payment plans can be made. A deposit of 1/3 to 1/2 is needed to begin the portrait.
Q: How long does it take to finish a portrait?
A: Depending on my waiting list, and the size and detail of the piece, portraits typically take 6 - 8 weeks to complete after the photo is chosen. If you have a special deadline, such as a birthday or anniversary, I will do my best to complete your portrait in time for the special occasion.
Q: Do you paint pets?
A: Yes! I paint and draw equestrian portraits as well as dog and cat portraits. Please send me an email for pet portrait pricing.
