Black and White Charcoal Portrait of Marie-Gabrielle Capet by Francois-Andre Vincent c.1782
We will be drawing on toned paper, using black and white charcoal.  This method will help you greatly in understanding value.
Using toned paper, instead of white paper, helps you to see and achieve correct values, getting your darkest darks and lightest lights.  This technique is centuries old going back to the Renaissance. You will be using your own reference photo to inspire your portrait.

Toned Paper Drawing Class

Testimonials
Here are comments by students on past classes:

"I really am enjoying my new found ability to draw on toned paper!" -  Pat L.

"I want to tell you how much I enjoyed these past Fridays, and how I have admired your teaching methods and how well you set out to make us all successful in our drawings! I feel like I really grasped all the attention to detail that your artistry requires!  You broke it down into very clear steps we could all make happen on our own.  I enjoyed just being there with you, watching your own drawing demonstrations, too.  I think you made us all feel we had the new tools to create and fine tune our own art on toned paper. Thank you!"  -  Sarah B.

"This was the second set of drawing classes I took with Marie.  This one, "Drawing on Toned Paper", was equally as good and challenging as the first set.  I enjoyed the classes and the one-on-one instruction; the clear process of seeing and drawing what you see was very effective for beginners as well as more advanced students. Everyone in the class achieved an excellent result and learned a great deal about their personal skill level.  Marie is an excellent, patient, and hands-on instructor who makes sure everyone succeeds.  I can't wait for the next class schedule! " - Gerry P.

"Marie, it was such a pleasure to be in your class.  I loved that there was no expectation to work on our pieces outside of class time.  I run a busy household and work part time and feel guilty about not working fast enough or keeping up with the rest of class.  I feel like I learned so much in those short 6 weeks. With two children, I'm often carting them to their activities and taking this class reminded me that it's important to set aside time for me...time to be creative.  I think as we get older we never lose the desire to create...just the time."   -A

"I feel that Marie Donato has enriched my life by introducing me to a completely new method of creating a drawing, on toned paper, which is a stand alone work of art and not just a sketch. Marie is an encouraging and patient instructor, and I count myself lucky to have taken her class." - Pat Long
